It's been a while since I've updated my school blog. I've since finished my student teaching, graduated (yay!), subbed for about 6 months, hunted for a job for most of the summer, and was hired!
I am now a Kindergarten teacher at a school only 5 minutes away. The drive is great! It is so nice to be able to run back and forth to school and home as I get things done.
Today I have been hired for one week. It was last Thursday that I had my interview. I felt that it went well and like what I saw in the school. I had interviewed for a 3rd grade position as well as a kindergarten position. My thoughts were constantly on what would come of it after the interview. Every time the phone would ring my stomach would flip. Well, after a long day, I got a call at 9:30 that same night. It was the principal offering me a job as a kindergarten teacher! (Thank you God!) I was relieved and excited and a little nervous all at the same time. The thing is, I had to start on Monday with Kindergarten Camp for 3 days. The room that I was going to have as my classroom had previously been used for storage, so there was a lot of work to be done.
A little after 7 on Friday morning I drove up to the school and got to work. Kevin took off work and helped me move, clean, hang, arrange, or anything else that I needed. My sister-in-law Megan and little George even got to come for a while and help me get things ready. Even my good friend Darcy who I did my second placing in Student Teaching with came and spent hours with me Friday and Sunday sweating a decorating with me. I am so thankful for everyone who so graciously gave hours and supplies to me to help me get things together for my Kindergarten class. Kev's family even spent a couple of hours helping me cut and create various things I needed to get done.
Monday rolled around and that storage room was finally looking like a classroom (a pretty cute one I think). I had 16 kids the first day of "camp" and the fun started right away...
We had just taken a bathroom break as a class and literally just sat done as a little boys yells out loud, "I have to go poop!!" I sigh to myself and let him know a better way to let me know he needs the restroom, then ask him if he is sure he needs to go. He is insistent. It just so happened that the principal was popping her head in as this was going down and volunteered to take him to the restroom for me. So, she takes him down there, waits a few minutes outside, and then she sees him walk out into the alcove of the restroom- his shorts and underwear around his ankles. She said that he looks at her, raises his hands in confusion, and says "At home, my mom wipes my butt!" Trying to be "the adult" she told him "Well, here, we aren't gonna do that for you! Tell your mom tonight that you need to learn to wipe your own".
This was a great story to hear after a long weekend of preparing and teaching the kids how to act while at school. The principal has now decided when things get stressful that she can just say "At home, my mom wipes my butt!" and things will not be so bad...
I'm looking forward to a wonderful school year with these kids. I can already tell that I am going to love having them and learning with them. This is just the beginning! School hasn't even started yet, and I am already laughing at the things that have come out of their mouths!
